I've been working on this shawl pattern for a while now, and was very much looking forward to introducing you to it.
S'up coconut was designed with a limited edition color from Sac Amé, an indie yarn dyer from Québec. The blue is even more amazing in person than in pictures. Featuring alternating sections of texture and mesh, the triangle shawl has a novel border decorated with wooden beads. The combination of the blue yarn and the different browns of the beads remind me of the colourful drinks one gets (too) many of on an island vacation, hence the name.

80% Merino, 20% Nylon

Notions
Yarn needle; stitch markers.
Optional 37 large wooden beads (or large beads of your choice) and steel hook to pull yarn through. I purchased my beads in the Crafts section at WalMart.
GAUGE
5 herr-hdc rows, blocked = 1 in (2.5 cm)
14 herr-hdc stitches, blocked = 4 in (10 cm)
To check your gauge
Begin to crochet the shawl and measure each information as it becomes possible to do so, stretching slightly to account for blocking. Adjust hook accordingly.
FINISHED SIZE
82.75 in (210 cm) wide x 29.5 in (75 cm) high, excluding long chain loop fringe.

NOTES
Starting Ch 1 does not replace sc.

Place a marker in the middle stitch and move it up as you work. It may be helpful to also place markers in the 1st and last sts to keep track of them.
The first time you work Row 2, the underlined instructions are only worked once, in the next stitch.
SPECIAL STITCHES
Extended single crochet (esc): Insert hook in indicated st, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 1 loop on hook, yarn over, pull through 2 remaining loops.
Herringbone half-double crochet (herr-hdc): Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st, yarn over and pull up a loop through that stitch and the first loop on the hook, yarn over, pull through 2 remaining loops.

Row 1, option A. 5 sc in a magic circle, do not join, turn. 5 sts
Not a fan of the magic circle? Neither am I. You can do this instead:

In Rows 2 and 3, we will be creating long chain space loops that will remain unworked: work in single crochet as indicated, crochet the chains, work in single crochet again starting in the next unworked stitch from the previous row.
IMPORTANT: In the next row, count the ch-2 spaces from Row 1 as 1 stitch.
Row 2. Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 8, *ch 28, sc in next 10, repeat from * until 5 sts remain before marker, sc in last 5 sts before marker, (sc, ch 28, sc) in marked st, sc in next 5, repeat from * until 9 sts remain, sc in next 8, 2 sc in last, turn. 373 sts + 37 long chain space loops
IMPORTANT: In the next row, do not work into any of the long chain space loops – only into the sc before and after them.
Row 3. Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 9, *ch 26, sc in next 10, repeat from * until 6 sts remain before central ch-28, sc in last 6 sts before these, ch 26, sc in next 6, repeat from * until 10 sts remain, sc in next 9, 2 sc in last. 377 sts + 37 long chain space loops
At the end of the last row, finish off and weave ends in.
FINISHING
If you are NOT working with wooden beads, tie an overhand knot (see reference below) at the base of each group of 2 long chain loops (Rows 2 and 3 of Border). Do not tie these knots too tightly (in other words: do not pull shawl fabric into them) but do make sure they will not come undone.
If you ARE working with wooden beads, pull a wooden bead over each group of 2 long chain loops using the steel hook. Pull the bead as close as possible to Row 3 of Border, without pulling the shawl fabric into the bead. Tie an overhand knot (see reference below) at the base of each bead.
