Free Crochet Pattern: Granny Square Fanny Pack

Get ready to turn heads with this trendy crochet fanny pack pattern made entirely from beautiful granny squares. Perfect for beginners and seasoned makers alike, create a stylish, hands-free bag that’s ideal for festivals, travel, or everyday wear. Sturdy, customizable and endlessly versatile, this granny square waist bag brings a modern twist to a classic crochet motif.

I've been on a granny square kick of late, and therefore just had to write up my own Granny Fanny with two colours of Wander Yarn from Furls Crochet. I hope you like it.

I lined mine with a square of fabric purchased at a big box store. I don't currently own a sewing machine (!) so the lining and zipper were hand sewn. For the strap, I just grabbed one from a bag I have that I thought would look cool. And it does!

Thanks to Furls Crochet for inviting me to their 2025 Blog Hop. If we've never met before, I hope you'll like it here. Want more crochet for your inbox ? Or course you do! Which is why you should sign up to my More crochet for your inbox newsletter. PS It's where most of my tests and promos are found.

ASSEMBLY

Zig zag sl st seam

With their RS facing, lay two squares in front of you. Align the stitches of one of their sides and pin or clip together if desired.

  1. Make a slip knot on the hook, then pull the hook out of the loop and hold the yarn at the back of the work.
  2. Insert the hook into the first st of the first square from front to back, put loop back on hook and pull to the front. Yarn over and pull up a loop.
  3. Keeping the yarn behind the work, insert the hook into the first st of the second square, from front to back.
  4. Complete a sl st: yarn over, pull loop to the front and through all loops on hook in the same movement.
  5. Continue in this way, inserting the hook from front to back into the next st of the first square and completing the sl st, before doing the same in the corresponding st of the second square.
  6. Once all sts have been worked across both squares, fasten off leaving a long tail.

Assemble squares as follows:

Red arrow: Sew bottoms of Squares 1 and 2 together.

Orange arrows: Fold Square 3 in half and sew to assembled squares.

Blue arrows: Fold Square 4 in half and sew to opposite side.

TOP BORDER

With RS facing, join A to top of bag and work as follows:

Round 1. Ch 1, [sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog in next 2] around, counting corners of granny squares as 2 sts. Do not join.

Round 2. Sc in each st around, changing to B as you complete the last sc. Do not join.

Round 3. Sl st in first st, ch 1, [sl st in next st, ch 1] around, join with sl st in first st. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Using long tails of B, connect the seams to Round 3 of Top Border. Weave all ends in.

Fold fabric in half and trace bag onto it. Cut the fabric and sew inside the bag.

Sew the zipper to the lining.

Attach bag handle to either corner.
