It’s been a little while since I’ve designed a crochet hat pattern. This one was a request from Amélie at Wööl Yarn Emporium in Montebello (Qc) where I’ve started teaching crochet classes.
Meet Ursa Major, a free crochet hat pattern for bouclé yarn!
Amélie gave me a skein of Bouclé by Urso Yarn to come up with a winter hat and showed me this beauty by Camille Descôteaux, a Québec knitting designer I admire. I immediately thought of crocheting a similarly simple hat… but with an extravagantly wide brim.
I’m not gonna lie, I was not at all excited to play with Bouclé (not this one in particular, just the type of yarn in general). It looked like something that would tangle if I had to frog my work. I kept remining myself that designing a hat doesn’t require much frogging.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Bouclé yarn looks soooo good with our crochet stitches! Dare I say… BETTER than when it’s knit. It keeps its beautiful texture more and is NOT AT ALL hard to work with.
I’m not kidding. I had to frog the wide brim a surprising number of times and got absolutely no tangles!
This pattern is rated Easy – you’ll need to know or be eager to learn the basic crochet stitches and working in the round. Instructions are given for 6 sizes from Baby to Adult with tips on making it yours.
I hope you like it.

NOTES
Place a marker in the first stitch of each round and move it up as you work.
Hat is crocheted from the top down.
Brim and Even rounds of hat are crocheted in unjoined rounds (in a spiral) with 5.5 mm hook. Right side of this portion of hat is always facing as you crochet.
Ribbed border is worked in joined rounds with 6 mm hook.
Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
Starting at Round 2 of Ribbed border, work the first post stitch of each round around the ch-1 and the first stitch of the previous round to avoid unsightly holes.
Weird side of ribbing will be facing as you crochet, so its pretty side faces once border is folded.
