What’s this: This is the Stella Squared Shrug. It was designed in collaboration with Julie Asselin Hand-dyed yarns.
Why should I make this: Keep your shoulders warm on cool summer nights, or make
a perfect pair of comfy jeans look chic with this delicious shrug.
When will this get the most use: Year-round
Who is it for: Pattern is sized XS‐S (16’’ – 40 cm) / M‐L (20’’ – 50 cm) / XL‐XXL (24’’ – 60 cm) – back only, before blocking.
Where do I start: This pattern is rated Intermediate – You’ll need to be comfortable with crochet in general. You will need 300g (400g for XL-XXL) of Fingering weight yarn (used here: Piccolo by Julie Asselin Hand-dyed yarns) & a 4 mm hook. Other notions: a yarn needle, and some stitch markers.

Instructions
Section 1 : Squares – Make 10
Round 1: Ch 8, sl st to 1st ch to form ring.
Round 2: Ch 1, 16 sc in circle, sl st to 1st sc to close round.
Round 3: Ch 7 (dc, ch 4), *sk sc, dc in next sc, ch 4. Repeat from * around. Sl st to 3rd starting ch to close round. (8 dc, 8 ch 4 spaces)
Round 4: Ch 1, *(sc, dc, 2 tr, dc, sc) in next ch 4 space. Repeat from * around. Sl st to 1st sc to close round. (48 sts)
Round 5: Ch 8 (dtr, *ch 4), sk (sc, dc, tr), sc in next tr, ch 4, sk (dc, 2 sc, dc), sc in next tr, ch 4, sk (tr, dc, sc), dtr between 2 sc (in dc from round 3). Repeat from * around, ending last repeat with ch 4, sl st in 4th starting ch to close round. (4 dtr, 12 ch 4 spaces)
Round 6: Ch 3, 2 dc in same space, *(5 dc in next ch 4 space)3x, 3 dc in dtr (middle dc = corner). Repeat from * around, ending with 5 dc in ch 4 space, sl st to 3rd starting chain to close round. (72 dc)
Finish off & weave ends in.
Block each square to 4’’ (10cm) sides.
Assemble the squares into 2 5-square strips as follows:
With RS of 2 squares facing each other, join yarn with sl st through both thicknesses in st after corner. Ch 1, sc across through back loops only (closest & furthest loops to you), ending with sc in st before next corner. Finish off and weave ends in.
In this way, join 5 squares together, to form a long strip. Finish off & weave ends in.
Repeat with remaining 5 squares. Set aside.
Section 2 : Back – First half
Row 1 (set-up): With WS facing, attach yarn to corner st on long side of one of your square strips, ch 1, sc across 1st square to next corner on same square, *sk 1st corner st on next square, sc across to next corner of same square. Repeat from * across all 5 squares. Turn. (91 sc)
Row 2: Ch 3 (dc), 2 dc in same space, sk 2 sc, sc in next, *sk 2 sc, 5-dc shell in next, sk 2 sc, sc in next. Repeat from * across, ending with 3 dc in last stitch. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in same sp, *(dc, ch 3, dc) in next sc, sc in middle dc on next shell. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in top of starting ch. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 3 (dc), 2 dc in same space, *sc in ch-3 space, 5-dc shell in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with 3 dc in last stitch. Turn.
Repeat rows 3-4 until First half measures 8 (10, 12)’’ 20 (25, 30) cm without square strip, ending on a row 4. Finish off and weave ends in.
Section 2 : Back – Second Half
Repeat steps above with second strip, but do not finish off when you reach desired width. Instead, you will work row 3 through both halves as follows:
Final row: With RS of 2 halves facing each other, ch 1, sc in same sp through both thicknesses, *(dc in next sc on 2nd half only, ch 1, sl st to sc on 1st half only, ch 1, dc in same sc on 2nd half only), sc through both thicknesses in middle dc of next shell. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in top of starting ch, through both thicknesses. Finish off and weave ends in.
Section 3 : Shrug border
You now have a rectangle bordered by 2 strips of squares. Fold piece in half, aligning long sides. At each end, pin the outermost corners of the squares together, to help keep the border even as you work the assembly round as follows:
Round 1 (set-up): With WS facing, join yarn with sl st to any point on long side, ch 1. Working around piece, sc in ea sc row end, 2 sc in ea dc row end, sc from corner dc to next corner dc on squares. End with sl st in 1st sc. Turn.
Round 2: Ch 3 (dc), 2 dc in same space, sk 2 sc, sc in next, *sk 2 sc, 5-dc shell in next, sk 2 sc, sc in next. Repeat from * around, ending with 2 dc in same space as join, sl st to 3rd starting chain to close round. Turn.
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same sp, *(dc, ch 3, dc) in next sc, sc in middle dc on next shell. Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in 1st sc to close round. Turn.
Round 4: Ch 3 (dc), 2 dc in same space, *sc in ch-3 space, 5-dc shell in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with 2 dc in same space as join, sl st to 3rd starting chain to close round. Turn.
Rounds 5-11 (13, 15): Repeat rounds 3-4 3 (4, 5) times, ending on round 3. Turn.
Final round: Ch 1, *sc in each st around, 3 sc in each ch space around. End with sl st in 1st sc to close round. Finish off and weave ends in.
Section 4 : Sleeves
Assemble the 2 squares closest to the shrug border as follows:
With RS of 2 squares facing each other, join yarn with sl st through both thicknesses in st after corner. Ch 1, sc across through back loops only (closest & furthest loops to you), ending with sc in st before next corner. Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing.
This leaves 3 squares open for sleeve.
If you would like a larger sleeve, feel free to not assemble the squares completely.
Round 1 (set-up): With WS facing, join yarn with sl st to corner st of any of the sleeve squares, ch 1. Working around piece, sc from corner dc to st after next corner dc on squares. End with sl st in 1st sc. Turn. (60 sts)
Round 2: Ch 3 (dc), 2 dc in same space, sk 2 sc, sc in next, *sk 2 sc, 5-dc shell in next, sk 2 sc, sc in next. Repeat from * across, ending with 2 dc in same space as join, sl st to 3rd starting chain to close round. Turn.
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same sp, *(dc, ch 3, dc) in next sc, sc in middle dc on next shell. Repeat from * across, ending with sl st in 1st sc to close round. Turn.
Round 4: Ch 3 (dc), 2 dc in same space, *sc in ch-3 space, 5-dc shell in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with 2 dc in same space as join, sl st to 3rd starting chain to close round. Turn.
Rounds 5-21 (25, 25): Repeat rounds 3-4 3 (4, 5) times, ending on round 3. Turn.
Final round: Ch 1, *sc in each st around, 3 sc in each ch space around.
End with sl st in 1st sc to close round. Finish off and weave ends in.
Section 5 : Finishing
Using long tails, close underarms. Weave in all ends. Block lightly.
