A free crochet block for Moogly’s 2018 CAL from ACCROchet
Welcome! If we’ve not yet met, my name is Julie and I really, really like to crochet. (You’ll soon find that this is an understatement)
I love granny squares – but I love to play with their classic shape and look the most! So here is my square for this wonderful CAL : the Sideways Side Up!
MATERIALS
- 6mm hook (J/10)
- Red Heart “With love”
COLOR A : E400_1101 – Eggshell
COLOR B : E400_1805 – Bluebell
COLOR C : E400_1623 – Mallard
INSTRUCTIONS
With C, Ch 5, sl st in 1st ch to form ring.
Round 1 (RS) : Ch 3 (count as dc throughout), 2 dc in ring, (ch 3, 3 dc in ring) 3x, ch 3, sl st in 3rd starting ch. 4 corners, 4 3-dc sides – cut color C
Round 2 (with B) : Ch 3, dc in ea dc to next corner, 2 dc in corner, (ch 3, 2 dc in same corner, dc in ea dc to next corner, 2 dc in corner) 3x, ch 3, 2 dc in corner, sl st in 3rd starting ch. 4 corners, 4 7-dc sides – cut color B
Round 3 (with A throughout) : Ch 3, dc in ea dc to next corner, 2 dc in corner, (ch 3, 2 dc in same corner, dc in ea dc to next corner, 2 dc in corner) 3x, ch 3, 2 dc in corner, dc in ea dc to end, sl st in 3rd starting ch. 4 corners, 4 11-dc sides – you will work with A for the rest of the square.
Round 4 : Repeat Round 3. Finish off. 4 corners, 4 15-dc sides
Now working in rows, with A throughout :
Row 5 (RS) : Join in 1st corner, ch 3, dc in same space, dc in ea dc to next corner, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in corner), dc in ea dc to next corner, 2 dc in next corner. Finish off. 1 corner, 2 19-dc sides
Rows 6-11 (RS) : Join in 3rd starting ch, ch 3, dc in ea dc to corner, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in corner), dc in ea dc to end. Finish off. 1 corner, 2 31-dc sides
Now working in rounds, with A :
Round 12 (RS) :
SIDE 1 – Join in 3rd starting ch, ch 3, dc in same space, dc in ea dc to corner, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in corner);
SIDE 2 – Dc in ea dc to end, 2 dc in last. Create corner : ch 3, 2 dc in same;
SIDE 3 – Now working in row ends : 2 dc in ea row end and in ch-sp from round 4, create next corner at end of this side by working (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc);
SIDE 4 – Dc in ea dc, and 2 dc in ch-sp from round 4, create next corner at end of this side by working (2 dc, ch 3), sl st in 3rd starting ch.
4 corners, 4 35-dc sides
Round 13 : Ch 1, sc in ea st around, 3 sc in ea corner, sl st to 1st sc.
Finish off. Weave in all ends.

It would be helpful if you would include the finished size of the granny squares with the other specifics for the square. I am in the process of grouping my “grannies” by size so they will fit together easier. If I know the original size that helps me if I want to make mine larger or smaller.
I didn’t start out to be much of a fan for grannies, but that was before I realized that you can do almost anything with them and use so many color combinations to make the same square look totally different from all the rest. Not to mention using up so many “leftovers”.
