Special Stitches
First linked treble crochet (First ltr): insert hook in 2nd chain from hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, insert hook in 3rd chain from hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, insert hook in same space, yarn over, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), (yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook) 3 times.
Linked treble crochet (ltr): insert hook in top horizontal bar of previous stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, insert hook in bottom horizontal bar of previous stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), (yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook) 3 times.
Notes
- The ch-1, ch-2 or ch-3 at the beginning of a row or round does not count as a st.
- In order to weave in less ends, carry the unused colour up the side.

Row 2 (RS): Ch 3, first ltr in 1st st, ltr in ea st to end, change to A while completing last st. Turn.
Rows 3-6: Repeat Row 2, alternating colours after each row.
Row 7 (with A): loosely sl st in ea st to end, change to B while completing last st. Turn.
Rows 8-13: Repeat Row 2, alternating colours after each row.
At the end of last row, do not change colours.
BORDER
With A and RS facing.
Round 1: Ch 2, 3 hdc in ea ltr row end, ch 3 for corner (39 sts); working across starting ch, sc in ea ch to end, ch 3 for corner (30 sts); 3 hdc in ea ltr row end, ch 3 for corner (39 sts); working across Row 13, sc in ea sc to end, ch 3 for corner (30 sts); sl st to 1st hdc to close round, do not turn. (138 sts, 4 ch-3 corners)
Round 2: Ch 2, [hdc in ea st to next corner, (hdc, ch 3, hdc) in corner] 4 times, sl st to 1st hdc to close round, do not turn. (146 sts, 4 ch-3 corners)
Round 3: Ch 1, [sc in ea st to next corner, (sc, ch 3, sc) in corner] 4 times, sl st to 1st sc to close round. Finish off and weave ends in. (154 sts, 4 ch-3 corners)
