Gauge Swatch

I rarely say this, but gauge isn’t paramount for this project.

To check your gauge

Work according to the instructions until Round 5. Lay the work flat to measure its width. Adjust the hook if necessary.

FINISHED SIZE

Height 21 in (53 cm)

Width 7 in (18 cm)

Stitch Guide

  • RS… right side
  • st… stitch
  • sl st… slip stitch
  • ch… chain
  • sc… single crochet
  • sc2tog… (2 single crochet closed together — decrease)
  • PM… place a marker

Notes

Crocheted in a spiral from the Toe upwards. Rounds are not joined.

The heel is an “afterthought” heel. This means that between the foot and the leg, we will prepare an opening that will later be closed as we make the heel.

Working with this type of yarn requires patience. You won’t see your stitches with your eyes, but with your fingers. Count. Your. Stitches. And don’t forget to use stitch markers to find your way around ;P.

The final stocking may look better on the wrong side. That’s absolutely fine!

Gently combing the yarn with a wire brush (a cat brush, for example) can blur the stitches even more.

INSTRUCTIONS

Foot

Begin with a magic circle.

Round 1. Ch 1, 7 sc in the magic circle. Gently pull on the yarn to close the magic circle. 7 sc

.

PM in 1st st; move marker up with each round.

Round 2. 2 sc in each st around. 14 sc

Round 3. [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] around. 21 sc

Round 4. [Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] around. 28 sc

Rounds 5-21. Sc in each st around.

Round 22 — Heel Opening. Ch 14, skip 14 sts, sc in next 14 sts. 28 sts

Leg

Round 23. Ch 1, sc in next 14 chs, sc in next 14 sc. 28 sc

Rounds 24-47. Sc in each st around. At the end of the last round, fasten off and

weave ends in.

Heel

With RS facing, join yarn with sl st to work under chs at Heel Opening.

Round 1. Sc under 14 chs, sc in 14 skipped sts from Round 22. 28 sc

PM in 1st and 15th sts; move both markers up in the st resulting from the decrease.

Rounds 2-5. [Sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc in each st until 2 sts remain before marker, sc2tog over those 2 sts] 2x. -4 sts each round, for a total of 12 sts remaning after last round. At the end of the last round, fasten leaving a long tail for finishing.

If you’re feeling particularly festive, don’t hesitate to make a longer stocking with what’s left of the yarn after the heel! Simply join the yarn at any point around the top of the leg and continue working in sc.

Finishing

With the long tail and a yarn needle, sew the heel opening closed.

Weave all ends in.
