This free crochet pattern for a colourful striped hat is the perfect project to whip up this winter season. You can easily customize it to suit your wardrobe and include all your favorite colours, or use the same colours I did and let them do all the work.

Materials
Hobbii – Portobello 60% Cotton, 28% Acrylic, 12% Wool
50 g (131 yds/120 m)
2 balls main colour + 1 ball each of 4 colours
Used here: A-70 (Purple Rain), B-79 (Open Sea), C-116 (Hunter Green), D-43 (Bordeaux), and E-56 (Antique Rose)
Hooks
5 mm and 5.5 mm
Notions
Yarn needle, stitch markers, pompom or 3 in pompom maker
Gauge
With 5.5 mm hook, 13 sts and 13 rounds = 4 in (10 cm)
To check your gauge
Work in pattern until it is possible to measure work against information above. Adjust hook accordingly.

Baby: 14 in-16 in (36 cm-41 cm)
Toddler: 16 in-18 in (41 cm-46 cm)

Notes
Border is worked first in rows and sewn together at short ends.
Stitches are picked up in row ends to work the hat/cowl in turned rounds.
Change colours every 2 rounds, as you sl st. I prefer to cut the yarn at each change, but you can decide to float them inside.
INSTRUCTIONS
HAT BORDER
With A and 5 mm hook, ch 6 (6, 7, 7, 9, 9).
Row 1. Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. 5 (5, 6, 6, 8, 8) sts
Border is 1.2 (1.2, 1.4, 1.4, 1.8, 1.8) in (3 (3, 3.5, 3.5, 4.5, 4.5) cm) wide. After 14 rows, it should measure 4 in (10 cm).
Row 2. Ch 1, sc in first st, sc-BLO in next 3 (3, 4, 4, 6, 6), sc in last, turn.
Rows 3-50 (58, 64, 70, 74, 76). Repeat Row 2.
After last row, sew short ends together with wrong side facing.
Fasten off.
HAT BODY
With 5.5 mm hook
Optional (see Felted Button for complete tutorial):
Working in row ends, join B at seam and loosely sl st in each row end around, sl st to first sl st. Do not fasten off. 50 (58, 64, 70, 74, 76) sts
Round 1 (RS). Ch 1, *sc in first st, dc in next, repeat from * around, sl st in first sc, turn.
Round 2. Ch 1, *sc in first st, dc in next, repeat from * around, change to next colour as you sl st in first sc, turn.
Rounds 3-20 (22, 24, 26, 26, 30). Repeat Rounds 1-2.
After last round, fasten off leaving a long tail. Weave tail through sts on last round. Pull tight to close. Weave ends inside the hat.
If using a pompom maker, make a pompom using all 5 colours and attach to the top of the hat. Alternatively, attach a pompon to the top of the hat.
